Give Thanks by Giving Back

Thanksgiving is a day of turkey (or pernil), football and family. We use the day as an excuse to eat in excess, drink on a weekday and catch up with old friends and family. This year, I invite you to do something just as fun… just different.

Latino Bigs is an organization that I helped jumpstart as a co-founder nearly 4 years ago at the tender age of 24. To date, Latino Bigs has sprung up nationally serving as an intermediary in recruitment of Latinos to volunteer as mentors to children who may be less fortunate. Doesn’t that sound fun? If not, you may reconsider how you’re looking at it.

By becoming a mentor, you have a great deal of opportunity to see life from a different POV. A POV that can help you professionally, personally or in any other aspect of life. Additionally, who can deny that little kids/teenagers only like doing fun “stuff”.  By becoming a mentor, you can now schedule times on a monthly basis to schedule in that fun that can bring you back to your youth. A type of fun that helps shape the mind and soul of a child in a very necessary and positive way.

Don’t forget that while Thanksgiving is about food, fun and football, the main purpose of what it was built off of was to give thanks. This year, dedicate a new person you are thankful to have in your life and be sure to know that someone else is just as thankful for having you in theirs.

About Lance Ríos

Lancio (Lance) Antonio Rios grew up on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. Lance’s long-time interest in Latino cultures and communities spiked when he accepted an internship in the South Bronx in New York City, soon after earning a Bachelor’s in Sports Management and Marketing from Bowling Green State University. After witnessing the diversity of the Latino culture in the area, he decided that moving to New York would be more beneficial. He has finessed many talents through working in English and Spanish-language media and has recently developed a Facebook fan page called Being Latino. Since May, Being Latino has experienced tremendous and exponential growth with support from Latinos who care about discussing history, culture and social issues. Since its conception, Being Latino has already harnessed over 60,000 fans with an additional 170+ Latino-based fan pages on Facebook, a following on Google Buzz, Twitter, YouTube and WordPress which collectively equates to over 100,000 in a year with a $0.00 budget.
