"Reality Bites: Kim Kardashian’s getting divorced

From the editor…

I’m pretty blessed to know some pretty amazing people. Among these are a wonderful director who sacrificed everything to make a movie with a positive message for Latinas; an entrepreneur who has more than once been a one-man march for justice; a team of people dedicated to making education a reality for Latinos; a Mom who has dedicated her time to teaching others about special needs children, and that’s not even counting the staff and writers of Being Latino.

If the Being Latino team were a reality show, the producers would probably portray us as superheroes and put us in capes for ratings.

But real superheroes don’t wear capes and the BL team doesn’t need to be a spectacle. We’re made up of regular people who have full-time jobs, and who sacrifice much of our free time to be writers, to plan community events, to entertain, and bring to light issues that affect Latinos and the world.

We are, individually, educators, artists, filmmakers, writers and singers. And as a group? Well, as a group we are dreamers and idealists, who know that changing the world requires action.

So why the Kim K. reference in the title, I’m sure you’re wondering. Well, as the headlines of the fake breakup of her even more fake marriage hit the media today, it both infuriated me and made me thankful.

The world may be unfair, and society may reward the talentless who are willing to trade integrity for fame and fortune. But in my world, in my reality–in most people’s– talent, hard work, and dedication have their own rewards. And as the Jersey Shore crew depletes the world of tanning lotion and gel; as the Kardashians destroy the sanctity of marriage — yes, the Kardashians, not the gays– we real people will continue to change the world all the while knowing that the truth is “reality” bites.
