Join us as we explore the work of Latino authors together, both old and new! If you missed last month’s book, no need to worry. The Book of the Month for May is The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by author Junot Diaz, who was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. His book The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao has won numerous prizes and awards. He is also the author of the book Drown.
Read excerpts from a discussion with Junot Diaz here.
The blurb on the inside cover of the book gives us an idea of what’s in store for us this month:
Things have never been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd, a New Jersey romantic who dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, of finding love. But he may never get what he wants, thanks to the fukú- the ancient curse that has haunted Oscar’s family for generations, dooming them to prison, torture, tragic accidents, and, above all, ill-starred love. Oscar, still dreaming of his first kiss, is only its most recent victim – until the fateful summer that he decides to be its last.
