LATINO Heritage Month: Si Se Puede!

hhm

Hispanic (LATINO) Heritage Month:

According to the U.S. Census, “In September 1968, Congress authorized President Lyndon B. Johnson to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week, which was observed during the week that included Sept. 15 and Sept. 16. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). America celebrates the culture and traditions of those who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.”

For me, Hispanic Heritage Month and/or Latino Heritage Month means that the United States is allowing US to showcase our people and it is up to US to make sure we’re screaming the entire time. During this month we should research the local HHM festivals and gatherings, watch the HHM TV specials and take it upon ourselves to further educate ourselves on the significant impact that we, as a collective group, have on this country.

I would like to take this time to ask you all to contribute to Being Latino on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/beinglatino) and share information with us relevant to YOUR country of origin. I try my best to include as much as possible, but I am still only one person. If you want to see more Puerto Rican history, then post it… educate us! If you want to expose athletes from Argentina, poets from Chile, musicians from Nicaragua… then take the it upon yourself to provide it to the page. Although I have volunteered myself as the point person to coordinate this group, it is not mine, it is all 17,800+ of yours!

si se puede

Latino Heritage Month is something that we truly need to recognize as our time to shine. Do not let this month slip away from you, take advantage mi gente!

About Lance Ríos

Lancio (Lance) Antonio Rios grew up on the west side of Cleveland, Ohio. Lance’s long-time interest in Latino cultures and communities spiked when he accepted an internship in the South Bronx in New York City, soon after earning a Bachelor’s in Sports Management and Marketing from Bowling Green State University. After witnessing the diversity of the Latino culture in the area, he decided that moving to New York would be more beneficial. He has finessed many talents through working in English and Spanish-language media and has recently developed a Facebook fan page called Being Latino. Since May, Being Latino has experienced tremendous and exponential growth with support from Latinos who care about discussing history, culture and social issues. Since its conception, Being Latino has already harnessed over 60,000 fans with an additional 170+ Latino-based fan pages on Facebook, a following on Google Buzz, Twitter, YouTube and WordPress which collectively equates to over 100,000 in a year with a $0.00 budget.
