Latinos Breaking Barriers: Tribute to Selena Quintanilla

Born Selena Quintanilla on April 16, 1971, she was  best known  as Selena. The youngest child of a Mexican-American couple, she released her first album at the age of 12. She won Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1987 and landed a recording contract with EMI. Her fame grew throughout the early 1990s across Latin-America. Hersecond album “Ven Conmigo” was the first Tejano record to achieve gold  status.

Selena was murdered on March 31, 1995 at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar.  Selena, a film based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez in 1997 sky rocketed her popularity in the United States . Selena was commemorated with a museum by her family in Corpus Christi, TX which is visited regularly  by fans each week. Selena has achieved critical and commercial success selling over 65 million records worldwide after her death.
