“Miracle of Spanish Harlem” and “History of Space Flight” winners at National Film Showcase

As part of its recently concluded National Latino Film Showcase, Hispanicize 2012 proudly announced that it has awarded the best feature length film prize of $10,000 to Derek Velez Partridge for “The Miracle of Spanish Harlem” and the best short film prize of $5,000 to Chris Caraballo for “The History of Spaceflight”.  The film showcase awards were sponsored by BlackBerry.

The filmmakers were recognized last Friday at the “Scarface” film screening event that concluded Hispanicize 2012.  Both films will return to Miami in mid-May for a special awards night red carpet screening at a local movie theater.

“We salute the winners and all the Latino filmmakers and actors who this year helped set the foundation for the National Latino Film Showcase,” said Manny Ruiz, founder and creative director of Hispanicize 2012.   “As we continue to evolve in 2013, Latino filmmakers and actors will play an even bigger role in everything we do.”

 The Miracle of Spanish Harlem

 “The Miracle of Spanish Harlem” is an emotional drama about redemption and a man who tries to make his own miracle, only to find a real one.  Directed by Partridge, the screenplay was written by Carlos Bermudez.  The cast includes Kate De Castillo, Luis Antonio Ramos and Tony Plana, among others.

The History of Spaceflight

Directed and produced by Chris Caraballo,“The History of Spaceflight”

tells the story of several children who are left alone for an afternoon and their scheme to sneak up into the attic to uncover their Christmas presents early.   It’s one small step for them, but one giant leap for children everywhere.  The cast includes Christian Kramme, Cole Jensen, Rachel & Amanda Pace.
Among the filmmakers, actors and celebrities who attended or screened their works at Hispanicize 2012 this year were: Andy Garcia (For Greater Glory), Steven Bauer (Scarface), Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer), Emilio Estefan (19-time GRAMMY-winning Music Producer), Jessy Terrero (director of Gun and Soul Plane), Gina Rodriguez (Filly Brown), Dominik Garcia-Lorido (Magic City), Yul Vasquez (Magic City), Nelly Galan (Entrepreneur, The Swan), Pepe Serna (Scarface), Maria Elena Salinas (Univision anchor), Angel Salazar (Scarface), Mauricio Mendoza (Unknowns, Resurrection Blvd.,)and Yeniffer Behrens (Unknowns, Decisions), as well as others.

The National Latino Film Showcase was a co-production of Hispanicize 2012 with Latin Heat Media and Getty Images Hispanic and was sponsored by BlackBerry and Diageo.  Other sponsors include Cricket Wireless, Starz, Regal Cinemas, Bacardi USA, HATUEY Cuban-Style Ale and uSamp.
