Oscar is a white, middle-aged man

I’m not going to tell you something you don’t already know  -  Oscar is a white, middle-aged man. While most of us have believed this for years, now the LA Times actually conducted an investigation into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership. Because the Academy has never released a list of member’s names, the reporters interviewed actors and their representatives and were able to identify 89 percent of the members.

Would you respect an organization whose membership was 94 percent white and 77 percent male? Well unfortunately, these are the findings in the report.

Frank Pierson, former Academy president is quoted as saying, “I don’t see any reason why the academy should represent the entire American population. That’s what the People’s Choice Awards are for.” “We represent the professional filmmakers, and if that doesn’t reflect the general population, so be it.”

With an attitude like that, how are young writers, actors, directors, and producers of color going to get a break.

About Eileen Rivera

Eileen was born in The Bronx, to Puerto Rican parents. She grew up thinking the whole world was Latino. Moving to Rockland County in upstate New York taught her it wasn’t. One more move in 1976, brought her to Hudson County, New Jersey where she currently resides. She attended Rutgers-Newark where she majored in Social Work with a minor in Puerto Rican studies. Eileen credits her history professor, Dr. Olga Wagenheim, for the spark and impetus to search out her roots in a pre-computer era. The daughter of a minister, she credits her father for the activism, volunteerism and search for justice that have characterized her adult years.

The mother of two adult daughters, Eileen has worked in the Juvenile Justice system for twenty-eight years. She acts as a liaison between the Juvenile Detention Center and the Juvenile Court.

Writing was something she shared with family. Stories and songs for her children and Christmas tales for the extended family. She now shares her writing with a larger family, the Being Latino family.

  10. Does anyone really care????

  11. The model for Oscar was a Mexican who stared in numerous Sam Pekenpah films including ” Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia” , and “The Wild Bunch “

  12. I bet you the majority of Oscar voters are not Latino and they are not conservative Republicans either. Try urban Democrat “progressive” elitist baby boomers that read the New York Times. Many have Latino maids and gardeners. Of course they don’t want to release names, because then the public will see how one sided the whole thing is.

  13. yes , all are white over 50 yrs .. shame ..

  14. race is such a relevant topic when their is not chance of crossing the finish line.
