Ricky Martin is back in the news. but no new album from the three-time Latin Grammy winner — this time, Ricky’s making headlines for cyber smacking a woman.
Allow us to explain.
In a recent interview with Peru21, Cindy Mejia, aka Miss Peru, made some controversial comments about gay children:
(translated) “In my case, the day that God permits me to have children, it wouldn’t happen because these things happen perhaps because a child grew up without a father or was molested or lived with his mother and sisters became effeminate. I’m not too keen on the subject. The day I have my children I will entrust them to God completely, will raise them with care with a father and mother and support them completely, because there should always be communication.”
Ricky immediate shared his reaction by tweeting, “Que lastima, y que comentarios tan desatinados. #ignorancia.” He ended his tweet by tagging the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (@GLAAD).
After hearing that the comments she made had created a firestorm, Miss Peru quickly tried to blame everything on a misquotation by Peru21. But her defense was soon put to bed after the media company released audio showing that there was no misquotation of her statements on homosexuality.
The young woman then offered an apology to the LGBT* community and to Ricky himself:
“Due to my lack of knowledge of this topic, I made an error and it won’t happen again. I apologize if these comments contributed to discrimination or violence against the LGBT community. As a representative of Peruvian beauty, I promise to devote myself to fight against homophobia and ‘machismo.’ “
Miss Mejia, you are not “a representative of Peruvian beauty.” The Peruvian people — with their culture and traditions — and the Peruvian Andes are the real representatives of Peruvian beauty. Someone who speaks such vile ideology should never be said to represent beauty of any kind.
And if this commentary seems a bit harsh, it’s only because Miss Peru is seemingly unapologetic about the whole situation. A later tweet from her Twitter account read “Ricky Martin pronunciandose sobre lo que dije. Ya pedi disculpas. Suficiente.@ricky_martin.”
Unfortunately, Miss Perú 2012 was held as recent as June 30th, so Peruvians will have to wait an entire year to crown a true beauty.

Sounds like she just doesn’t know much about the subject or that she’s ignorant or uninformed about it. I mean, every time that someone says something about gays, is Ricky gonna rush to the rescue and Twitter about it?? lol I mean, it doesn’t do much good. Why not start a campaign about informing people about gays and letting them know that people are born gay?

Yeah Sarah but at the same time if he really wants to educate people, then he needs to start a campaign or foundation or something. I mean, stop fighting with people on Twitter. It’s getting old. This isn’t the 1st time he’s done it either. He needs to get up off the computer and start doing something to educate people, but at the same time, don’t make those people who don’t know about gays feel attacked, because then they won’t listen.

One of my cousins is gay so I’ve already had to deal with ignorance, but if you calmly explain things to people who aren’t aware, they’re more likely to listen. Attacking and offending people on Twitter is not how you do it. You catch more bees with honey as they say.
Why didn’t Ricky proudly stand up for the gay community during his career? He so conveniently came out of the Menudo bowl during a time it was beneficial to him and ok by society standards. Ms. Peru sounds very uneducated about the subject and was publicly schooled on the matter. Case closed. Can we focus on hunger and homeless now?

Ummm Twitter is a place where people share their opinions or thoughts, Ricky was sharing what he thought about the matter, not trying to start anything with anyone or inform it to anyone.

Miss Peru is not homophobic (a phobia is an irrational fear). She just happens to think that homosexual behavior is, as a matter of principle, morally wrong. Apparently Martin cannot tolerate the simple fact that there are lots of people who believe this (and are not afflicted by any patholigical fears). That’s why the subjet is, and will remain, controversial (duh!).
