Is our health food really “all-natural?”

Many of our shopping habits are dictated by decisions to use and consume products that are healthy and beneficial to our well being. And why not? You have to eat, so if you are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, of course you need to support that with the products that you buy. An entire market has been created on the idea that certain products or foods being ‘healthier’ than their counterparts, and a lot of times the only noticeable difference is that the healthy choice is more expensive and says “all natural” on the label.

How do we know that these allegedly ‘healthy’ products are actually good for us? The FDA does extend its regulations to ensure that a product can back its claims before it will let them market with it, but a lot of times the ingredients simply don’t match what’s on the box. If we are to truly be healthy, its important to be savvy about what is actually being included in what we eat.

About Ryan Almodovar

Ryan Almodovar was born in Queens, NY, but was transplanted to Lancaster, PA – the heart of Amish country, at an early age. Growing up in a small city that is completely surrounded by fields has let him develop many interests, including jazz music, songwriting, short stories, and exploring the vast farmlands – simply because there wasn’t too much else to do there. A love of writing, thinking outside the box, and his Puerto Rican culture led him to a bachelor’s degree in Economics with a minor in Spanish from the Millersville University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Ryan is a mild-mannered banker during the day, and though he may claim to fight crime at night, you are most likely to find him relaxing by playing guitar, watching baseball games, or working on a novel that never seems to get finished. You can read more of Ryan’s work at his blog, Awkward and Dangerous.

  1. or like “organic”, mmm hmm

  2. Bryan Anlas says:

Any product can be marketed as “all natural” because that is not regulated by the FDA, while “organic” on the other hand actually is regulated. Either way, we must all be more careful about what we eat; don’t eat too much junk food, instead try to eat fruits and vegetables. And don’t forget about portion sizes.

  3. But even the organic label is still supervised by the FDA, which is a racket… If oyu buy organic, you should also make sure it’s certified by another group, like Oregon Tilth. The food industry likes to work its way into everything, all for a $.

  4. That’s true I agree @Jennifer

  5. we cook throughout the day, the best thing I can do is read the ingredients, not the front cover or the nutrition facts. If what I am reading is something that is good for me and my family then we buy it. We always try to stick to fruits and veggies. “Organic” or “natural” didn’t exist when our parents were growing up, that was simply what food was for them, now it’s labels labels everywhere.

The fda should also require the labeling of genetically altered food. the corporations control the food we eat and have some personnel that move into the fda sector and lower requirements standards, and pass legislation favorable to the big food corporations all in the name of profit, without regard to public health and well being. Being a educated and savvy consumer is the best way to protect yourself. Its unfortunate we have our values in the wrong hands. Hopefully when enough people wake up we can and will change this for the better for everyone.
