More and more people are getting divorced, and it’s not just the younger couples. Older couples in their 50s and 60

s are getting divorced and facing the prospect of living out the rest of their lives alone. The divorce rate has increased over 50 percent in baby boomers, and this number will increase as the younger generation gets older.

People are living longer and are having second thoughts about spending their entire lives with just one person who may not be making them happy. Women have also become more willing to accept the single life and face the struggles that lay ahead on their own.

About Cindy Tovar

Born in Flushing, Queens to Colombian parents, Cindy has always loved reading and writing. For this reason, she entered Montclair State University to pursue an English degree, but instead fell in love with and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. During her time at Montclair State, Cindy joined the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) on campus. She immediately felt comfortable surrounded by peers that shared both love and pride for the Latino culture, something she had never experienced before. She ultimately became president of LASO. Since then, Cindy has earned her M.S. Ed. in Early Childhood Special Education from Bank Street College, and works as a bilingual Special Education preschool teacher in Brooklyn. Despite feeling exhausted by the time she reaches her New Jersey home, she still uses her spare time to write. Joining the Being Latino family is one of the best things that has happened to Cindy because it fulfills her in two ways: She can write to her heart’s content while reaching an engaging audience, and it helps her stay connected to her Latino culture. You can find more of Cindy’s writing on her personal blogs: Dagny’s Dichotomy, and Cindy’s Chronicles.

the upside of this is that their kids when they grow up are going to make amazing comedy about their disfunctional upbringing!!

  2. LASTIMA……….

  3. Amy DeOrtiz says:

    sad:(

  4. SMH

  5. We live in a generation of not being in love and not being together.

  6. Erika Flores says:

face it people! no matter what race or ethnic background, it is happening everywhere! Women are more independent and men don’t want to deal with anything! If they do it will only last for a little while. Todays mentality is so different from back then but I don’t know if it’s better! We look back how divorce rate was so low but were people really happy! Because “it wasn’t in style” women tolerated so much (men as well) for the sake of the family but in the long run did it help? I think there is a very small percentage of men and women who makes that decision and commit to each other and truly love each other! I mean “truly love”. Those are the ones who make it to their 50th! So sad that small percentage is getting smaller and smaller! I don’t believe in marriage anymore!

  7. I think there’s a reason Baby Boomers are known as the worst generation…

  8. Marriage is highly overrated….

  9. Well, I just think people are not willing to work things out. They are selfish. This is. You are supposed to love each other in the good ones and bad ones.

  10. Phil Banks says:

Impatience and not willing to work things out plus the whole marriage because we have a child thing. Not surprising. Cheaters not apply, you’re destined to fail.

  11. Al Soto says:

@ Erika, not all guys are the same. There are a lot of us guys that deal with tons of stuff responsibly. Not everyone is the same. That said, marriages are definitely rocky these days. Men AND women need to readjust the way they view it and manage it. God help us all.

  12. Jesus Castro says:

Wow…it doesn’t help that marriage is glamorized like its a new BMW…the concept is disrespected over and over again on TV…out of all these shows the only marriage that has stood the test of time is Homer and Marge Simpson and that’s sad…Ouch !!!

  13. I feel like this article was written about me. There are a multitude of reasons for the failure of a long-term marriage, like mine. The only thing I have to say is please put more planning into your marriage, than your wedding.

  14. Baby Boomerism is more of a liberal Anglo construct, it doesn’t apply to well to many Latinos who where working too hard to provide for their families than to take place in the pop culture theme park that was the late 1960s and 70s. Thanks Baby Boomers for all your dysfunctions. You have given the world AIDS, broken homes, drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, lack of personal responsibility, me-ism, the Clintons, Obama, bad music, misguided idealization, excess, political correctness, drug culture…Far cry from the Greatest Generation, your parents, that lived through a great depression and fought WW 2 and sacrificed so much.

  15. Every generation has it’s level of dysfunction. Mine never heard of “starter marriages”, our marriages were for keeps, or so we thought.

  16. Jerry Felipe says:

Why Is it a big deal being single. Are we hurting anyone by choosing to stay that way. I guess I’m bound to go to hell for not wanting to get married. So much for my belief in world peace and prosperity, freedom and democracy, and life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to choose how you want to live your life.

  17. @Mario Ramirez “Baby Boomerism is more of a liberal Anglo construct,”

Mario try not to be so harsh on the liberals.

  18. Andrés Ruiz says:

All marriage really is, is a Free Trade Agreement between two ppl.. you don’t have to marry someone to love them

  19. @Mario Ronald Reagan was like the messiah for many Repugs and, “Ronald Reagan – divorced the mother of two of his children. Married Nancy Davis who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage” according to this site.

  20. I never mentioned Republicans or conservatives here.

  21. Erika Flores says:

@ Al.. Im sorry but I never said all guys are the same! I don’t agree with that statement. Same goes for women! No one is the same! Men are not willing to commit neither do women! For the sake of the children is the worst excuse anyone can use! The true meaning of marriage? What is it? Can anyone really answer this question? Probably with research they can but I don’t think people now a days knows the true meaning of it! It would be very interesting to know what marriage is in other countries! In this country, it has degraded to something unworthy and a waste of time! Sad to say! Television is a big contributor to this !

  22. Cee Cee B says:

Hell NO!… if your financially prepared.. who needs a partner to complete them? Thats what family is for… For the Ladies.. Take Care of YOU!… Prepare..
