Being Latino on Google Plus

Too macho for Match.com?

A co-worker of mine met her husband in an AOL chat room, way back when we were all getting hooked on the instant gratification of instant messaging, and the excitement of interacting online. My guess is she was probably one of the first to use the internet to her own romantic advantage.

After the chat rooms, the next trend I can remember was migente.com. So many of us spent time browsing through pictures and sending messages to attractive people in the hopes that they would respond. In college, I remember sitting with a friend in between classes and just rating people. Migente was a fun and easy way to meet prospective partners, but after a while, we noticed that it became a place for casual hook ups.

From this, it was only a matter time before dating sites became popular, and they still are. However, some of my single friends are noticing an issue: they’re having a difficult time finding Latino men on websites such as eHarmony or Match.com. Even after they have fixed their settings to exclude white or Asian men, they’re still getting sent these matches, with very few Latino matches at all. Perhaps this is happening because there just aren’t a large number of Latino members on these sites. Where are our Latino men? Are you guys still on Migente?

Another friend of mine met her ex-boyfriend through a dating site, but he told her never to tell his friends that they had met there. It seems that some men are embarrassed to admit that they have a profile, and I wonder if this is one of the reasons for the shortage of Latino men on these websites.

So what are Latino-lovin’ ladies supposed to do? Well, although I’ve never tried these myself, I do know that there are dating sites geared towards any type of mate you wish to acquire. For Latinos, there are sites such as Amigos and LatinAmericanCupid. For African Americans, there’s BlackSingles and BlackPeopleMeet. The online segregation continues by religion, too. If you want to find a Christian, there’s ChristianMingle, and if you’re Jewish, there’s the ever popular JDate.

So chicas, for now, if you want to find a Latino man, you may not have much luck on the mainstream sites. But check out the others, and maybe you’ll find your guy. And chicos? Come out, come out, wherever you are! There’s no shame in looking for love online. Believe me. I know plenty of women who will be happy to see you there.

About Cindy Tovar

Born in Flushing, Queens to Colombian parents, Cindy has always loved reading and writing. For this reason, she entered Montclair State University to pursue an English degree, but instead fell in love with and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology. During her time at Montclair State, Cindy joined the Latin American Student Organization (LASO) on campus. She immediately felt comfortable surrounded by peers that shared both love and pride for the Latino culture, something she had never experienced before. She ultimately became president of LASO. Since then, Cindy has earned her M.S. Ed. in Early Childhood Special Education from Bank Street College, and works as a bilingual Special Education preschool teacher in Brooklyn. Despite feeling exhausted by the time she reaches her New Jersey home, she still uses her spare time to write. Joining the Being Latino family is one of the best things that has happened to Cindy because it fulfills her in two ways: She can write to her heart’s content while reaching an engaging audience, and it helps her stay connected to her Latino culture. You can find more of Cindy’s writing on her personal blogs: Dagny’s Dichotomy, and Cindy’s Chronicles.

Are you kidding me? I’ve had to give up on dating sites because the latina prospects were so few and most of them never respond to emails. Maybe I just don’t know how to write a good profile but I’m a latino man who can freakin dance salsa professionally by the way and I’ve been out there. Where were the latina women?
