Your relationship status and your health: Marriage or cohabitation

Studies have shown that married people are happier than single people. Some married people I know would beg to differ, but if it’s generally true, is it really about being married or simply about being in a relationship?

A study published in the February issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family found that being in a romantic relationship, regardless of status, has benefits over being single.

“Participants who cohabited in the study were happier and had greater self-esteem than those who were married. This may be because cohabitation offers more room for independence and personal growth, which may be particularly important for some people at certain stages in life.”
