Being Latino

I’m feeling exploited! I am currently hunched over my computer writing my article and really feeling like I am not going to get anything out of this. Let’s see, what should I ask for? Should I ask for money? Nah, Being Latino is not a money making venture. Should I ask for fame? Hell no, I don’t need paparazzi hanging out on my stoop. Maybe I should ask for a Being Latino tee-shirt? Nah, I’ll just get it dirty cooking at the shelter on December 11th.

What is Being Latino all about? Maybe we all need a refresher course. Being Latino is a communication platform to educate and connect all people across the global Latino spectrum. It’s very simple. Some articles educate, some make us think, some make us laugh. What is so hard about that? Being Latino is a Facebook page that attempts to bring US all together as a family. There are no political rewards, no money being exchanged, no one becoming famous!

The reality is that Being Latino is gaining a thousand new fans every week. That has to mean something. Are we doing something right or are we doing something wrong? Recently we have had comments that infer that the Being Latino writers are being exploited because we do it for free. As a new writer, I thought that was the idea. You give your time because you feel you have something to say. “To educate and connect…” What more can you ask from life?

I dream of a world, where Latinos embrace our differences and celebrate our similarities. I dream of a world, where Congress respects Latinos. I dream of a world, where the President of the USA is Latino. I dream of a world, where the Dream Act becomes law. Yes, I am a dreamer. I am also the first one, in my family born, in this country. I am also the mother of two children who were raised Latina in this country. I attend Latino events, I buy tickets to Latino movies, I support Latino causes, what more can I do?

If you are reading this, you are a fan of Being Latino. Is there something we are missing? Is there something you want us to do? Being Latino is a dialogue. You tell us what you want and we deliver. Well, we attempt to deliver. When you come to the page and see advertisements posted by people, you already know that they are not Being Latino’s posts.

This is your page, let us know what you’re looking for.

About Eileen Rivera

Eileen was born in The Bronx, to Puerto Rican parents. She grew up thinking the whole world was Latino. Moving to Rockland County in upstate New York taught her it wasn’t. One more move in 1976, brought her to Hudson County, New Jersey where she currently resides. She attended Rutgers-Newark where she majored in Social Work with a minor in Puerto Rican studies. Eileen credits her history professor, Dr. Olga Wagenheim, for the spark and impetus to search out her roots in a pre-computer era. The daughter of a minister, she credits her father for the activism, volunteerism and search for justice that have characterized her adult years.

The mother of two adult daughters, Eileen has worked in the Juvenile Justice system for twenty-eight years. She acts as a liaison between the Juvenile Detention Center and the Juvenile Court.

Writing was something she shared with family. Stories and songs for her children and Christmas tales for the extended family. She now shares her writing with a larger family, the Being Latino family.

Being Latino is a blessing to us all. Being able to share our gift and make time for our familia of over 40 thousand members (and growing ever so quickly)is the least we can do for our Latin community. What we have is a gift and there is no price tag or fine print in something we were given. Great great piece!!
