Three Kings Day Best Buy Twitter Party: New media meets Latino tradition

As a child, while Christmas was certainly special, El Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) was magical. Growing up in Puerto Rico, the holidays seemed to last for a season, starting with Thanksgiving with a final celebration on January 6. The weeks in between were filled with wonderful food and music: traditions built around culture.

On January 5 we worked diligently to collect ‘hay’ and placed it in the boxes Mami provided. We then put them under our beds, a meal for the camels who carried them a long way. We awoke in the morning to find gifts in their place. It was the beginning of another day of celebration.

Those childhood memories are probably very similar to the ones of many Latinos. For those of us living in the U.S., where January 6 is not a holiday, it’s even more important that we not only treasure them, but also pass them on to the future generations of Latinos.

Join us on Thursday, January 5 for our Three Kings Day Twitter Party, presented by BestBuy and share your traditions and special memories with others by following hashtag #MiBestBuy.
