You’ve probably heard Facebook being referred to as Big Brother in the past, especially given the recent fervor that has happened in the last month or so amidst the various format changes. Comments have been made about the exposition of our privacy, as if Facebook is simply collecting information on us for their own sinister purposes. This may not necessarily be true, but a recent discovery by entrepreneur and hack Nik Cubrilovic has shown that Facebook does have the ability to track your online movements. Facebook achieves this by altering the ‘cookies’ created when you are on their website, rather than just deleting them, allowing Facebook to retrieve information from you whenever you visit a page that has a Facebook ‘like’ or ‘share’ option. So what is Mark Zuckerberg looking to achieve with this information? It’s hard to say, but it does have the possibility to be a major infringement of privacy – something that can’t be corrected easily by changing your account settings.
