In a move underscoring the Democratic Party’s desire to win the Latino vote in the upcoming election season, the Democrats have tapped Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to chair the national convention this summer in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Dems are expected to nominate President Barack Obama for a second term.
Villaraigosa, mayor of L.A. since 2005, will become only the second Latino to chair the Democratic National Convention. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson chaired the convention in 2004.
The mayor is also the third Mexican American to hold the office in Los Angeles and the only Mexican American to hold the office in over a century.
On February 14, Latino Decisions released a poll showing that, while President Obama enjoys a 70-percent approval rating among Latino voters, only 43 percent of Latino voters are sure that they’ll vote for him come Election Day. The decision by the Democratic National Committee, headed by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, shows that the Dems intend to win over undecided Latino voters in the months ahead of November.
