Being Latino turns 2!

by Lance Rios

Two years ago, Being Latino was born. Upon starting it, I never would have guessed that it would have grown to all that is has become today. On that late evening two years ago, I remember feeling frustrated that there were so many Latinos, doing so many great things yet there was such a limited amount of outlets to shine light on this underrepresented audience. Rather than complaining about it, I created the start to the solution.

Now, fast forward two years later. Being Latino Inc. has an administrative staff of 11 people, nine staff writers, a 56,000+ fan base following us on Facebook, we relaunched and renamed our blog as Being Latino Online Magazine in September 2010, and we are growing just as quickly as ever.

Over the past two years we coordinated a “National Feed the Homeless Day” effort, met with the President of Bolivia, marched against SB1070 in Phoenix, AZ, were represented at the Sundance Film Festival, established a content partnership with Fox News Latino, and most recently attended the Latin Billboard Awards as part of being invited to be a part of Telemundo’s Digital Influencers Day.

We have also gained the support of various celebrities such as John Leguizamo, Esai Morales, Edward James Olmos, Danny Trejo, America Ferrera, Wilmer Valdarama, and the list goes on. We’ve been recognized and have received various awards for our efforts within the social media space, we’ve gained notoriety through MAJOR news outlets, and so much more. All this in just 2 years…

With all that we have accomplished in these two short years, it is safe to say that we’re just getting started. We look forward to maintaining our relationships and partnerships that we have worked hard to build and can promise you that there will always be more to come. We’ve seen Being Latino grow from what was just started as a Facebook fanpage, into a movement, with a team built with some of this community’s most talented people.

It excites me to look back and see all of the things that we have accomplished, although the one thing that I can say excites me even more, will be looking forward to where we are going in the years to come. As always, we thank all of our supporters and promise to keep doing what we do best, provide YOU with the best intellectually stimulating entertainment for the Latino community.

Pa’lante.
