Latinos Breaking Barriers: Sofia Vergara

Born on July 10, 1972 in Barranquilla, Atlántico, Colombia, Sofia Vergara is a model, actress and entrepreneur.  She was married at the age of 18 and became a mother at the age of 20.  She attended dental school and left two semesters shy of graduating.  One might say this makes her a modern Latina who does a little bit of a lot of things (no one can do it all).

In 2010 she was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Modern Family; a nomination was well-deserved.

I have to admit that when I first heard that Sofia Vergara would be starring on the ABC sitcom, Modern Family I assumed she’d be playing the stereotypical role of the sexy Latina, who inadvertedly does and says humorous things due to her lack of knowledge of the American culture and/or English language.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was dead wrong.  The writers of this show could have easily written her character that way, but thankfully, they saw past that.

Sofia plays Gloria, the wife of Jay, an older American man and mother of Manny—played hilariously by the young and talented Rico Rodriguez.  She’s sexy, she’s definitely Latina (Colombiana) and has an accent, but that’s only a small part of what she brings.  She is all things that make a Latina woman and mother what they are.  She’s smart, she is warm, values her family above all else and brings humor y sabor to all she does and says

Gloria’s character is one instance where Hollywood got it right.

Comments

  1. And one thing you forgot to mention was how much I love her.

  2. k. Cedano says:

I used to LOVE her, especially back in the day when she had the show alongside Fiore in “Fuera De Serie”… I began to not like her as much after reading comments from her in interviews that enable stereotypes.

One thing’s for sure: She’s dfinitely talented and absolutely stunning.
