Letter to the "majority"

by Robert Rios III

To whom it may concern (AKA The self-proclaimed “Majority”):

It‘s been brought to our attention that there are those of you who were born in this country and who for some reason feel an inherent right to dictate who should be allowed to live here. While not necessarily through fault of your own – some of you being products of your upbringing – your melanin deficient populous are in need of some very important history lessons. It would seem your passion and conviction for the Red, White, and Blue has blinded you in blissful ignorance. Feeling that those who aren’t born within certain invisible lines on a map don’t belong and should be “sent back,” when by that same logic, you’re also referring to your Grand Parents, Great Grandparents, and predecessors.

Technically, Columbus and all those other folks from across the pond never had green cards, and didn’t ask or need permission to flee here for a better life. The simple fact is and always will be, those “brown-skinned people” that you love to hate have been on this side of the world centuries before the Mayflower and ages before the Tea Party, and Benjamin Franklin, well, his father was an immigrant too. That’s right folks, old Benny Boy was first generation, which according to some of these present-day extremists, makes him an enemy of the state for legitimizing his “Alien” Father.

This feeling of “superiority” is an illusion, and your “majority” is rapidly fading, as the Latino Spectrum, and not just the Mexican portion, is rising to take its rightful place on this side of the world, proving we are not a “Minority.” Try as you might to stop us, our spirit – though divided by flags and minor differences in dialect – unite through food, passion, and a love for our family and culture, somewhat borrowed as it may be. Just because some of us may not be as proficient in English as others, or not as fluent in Spanish as some may think we should be, that in no way, shape, or form means that we are not intelligent, or cannot comprehend or excel in this country, economy, and life on Earth.

Our Ancient Scholars figured things out about this world and universe long before your European counterparts, and our union with nature, while considered “primitive,” kept this world thriving for millennia before your big corporations gave birth to the destruction of our climate and possibly even our existence in less than two centuries.

Propaganda and pop culture continue to keep us occupied while the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the ones stuck in the middle are considered worse than terrorists (because they thought becoming a teacher was a good idea to give back to the next generation).

By now, you’ve hopefully realized the hypocrisy of this dangerous mindset, and while this letter is satirical, if everybody took some time to think about how they could become a part of the solution, then we wouldn’t have so many problems. Stop pointing fingers and just join hands, no matter the pigmentation. We are all the same race. We are Human.

    KUDOS!!! THANKS, we needed that!!!!

  2. Really great post! Yes, it probably comes off a bit harsh to some, but there’s nothing here that isn’t truth. In defense of some in the ‘majority’ or the dominating race…many of us are growing, learning, and realizing all the things that you speak of here…through the relationships that we keep and the people that we love. You’re last statements are the real key to ending the hate…”Stop pointing fingers and just join hands, no matter the pigmentation. We are all the same race. We are Human.”

If we could all realize this and commit to these actions, things would be much, much different. <3

  3. Awesome read!! Great article!
