When I grow up…

by Keyla Cedano

A few weeks ago I wrote a blog that mentioned my inability to settle on what I wanted to be in life. As a little girl, I remember my usual response was “a doctor.” As the years went by, it changed to “an architect,” “flight attendant,” and “nurse” among many others. Today (literally), I have a clearer view of my future without the need of an eight ball; and after a long conversation with a friend of mine who has no idea what he wants, I know what I want to be… for now that is.

Here’s a glimpse: When I grow up [or before I die], I want to write three books, I want to be a professional in both the science and math field; I want to be an event planner. I want to co-own a construction company with my best friend Jonathan, and I want to write songs for Qodigo Urbano. I also want to buy my dad a big house with a huge library and I want to pay for my mom’s long-desired ‘lipo.’ When I grow up I want to use my voice to motivate others and my abilities to help those who want it on BL and everywhere. I want to be able to castrate child molesters and have no restraint towards people like Jan Brewer and Rush Limbaugh. I want to be in a committed relationship with only two kids (if any). I want to attend all of Cesar Vargas’ premiers as VIP alongside the Queen Bees, and I want to promote social consciousness. I want to be a better speaker and become more assertive. I want to be a housewife and maintain independence. I want to tell my estranged brother I love him and mean it.

When I grow up I want to apologize to a woman I was rude to on the northbound #4 train in 42nd street NYC six years ago. I want to see an honest politician and I want to know that I’ll go to heaven. I want to be an expert in body language and I want to study the criminal mind. I want to meet a lot of condescending pompous pricks and give them a dose of their own medicine. I want to be fluent in French and I want to better my awful Portuguese. When I grow up, I want to be all that I want.

My desires and wishes are a direct reflection of my beautiful culture. My wants are as diverse and outrageous as my people. My expectations are high and my work to meeting them is slow. When I grow up I want to see Latinos become all that we want through our votes. Hope you are all creating a path toward a fulfilling future for our community.  Hope you went out there voted!

What do you think the Latino community wants? Are we voting to get what we want?

  4. Keyla! You sound like a Scanner! And the beauty of being Scanners is that we don’t have to choose who to be when we grow up – we can be all of them :D Read the book Refuse to Choose by Barbara Sher, it opened my eyes to the amazing world that waits for us. I found your blog cos I was looking for images to do with “growing up” and I LOVE that image there and would be stoked to use it in my blog post, with a link back to your site! Please let me know if that’s ok with you? Thanks, Tia
